Chapter Seven

‘Not you again.’ Sergeant Teal scratched his head.

‘I’m afraid so, Eric.’

‘I haven’t time.’

‘Perhaps you’ll have time when you know that rumours on the street say you and Catherine were lovers. Imagine that. A married man, here in such a small town.’ Trent hoped he’d believed his fib.

A moan left the sergeant’s mouth. ‘They’re just that, rumours.’

‘I’m not so sure. I have a reliable source.’

‘I used to like the police force. Now I’m beginning to lose faith.’

‘Why worry? Aren’t you retiring in a few years?’

‘That I am. Listen, Jackson, if you really want to know, I kept a close eye on Catherine, looked out for her.’

‘You didn’t seem to do such a good job.’

‘That’s beside the point. She asked me to check on her from time to time.’

‘Due to Charles’s behaviour.’

‘That’s right.’

‘Where were you the afternoon the murders took place?’

‘I don’t have to answer that.’

‘If I can’t find the answers I’m looking for, I’ll get Sydney on the line and have the detectives back up this way.’

‘For crying out loud. I was here at the station. I can prove it.’ He turned to the constable. ‘Hey Rob. Do you remember the day of the Barnett case?’

The constable stuck his head around the connecting door. ‘Sure do. Why?’

‘Apparently I need an alibi.’

‘You were here, weren’t you?’

Trent’s gut didn’t sit well when he left the station. Making his way towards the pub he took the steps and ambled towards the bar, taking up a stool.

‘What’ll it be, mate?’

‘Just a schooner, thanks.’

With his elbows propped on the edge of the bar and an empty glass of beer, Trent turned on the bar stool as the constable walked towards him.

‘Have you finished for the day, Rob?’

‘Yeah.’ He pulled up a stool beside him.

‘You don’t seem too happy.’ He swung around to face him.

‘I put in for a transfer and the sergeant doesn’t seem too pleased. He said he’d be retiring soon and didn’t want any hiccups.’

‘Why the transfer?’

Rob shot him a confused look. ‘He’s a little hard to take at times. I’ve been working here for over ten years and I’ve had enough.’

‘You were here when the Barnett case happened?’

‘Yeah. I kept in the shadows while the top guns from Sydney did the work. The sergeant wanted me to man the station while he went off on his trips.’

Trent straightened his back.

‘What’ll it be, Rob?’ the bartender said.

‘A middy thanks.’

‘What trips?’ Trent tried to fit the jigsaw together.

‘He’d take off for the day but I’ve never known where to.’

‘That’s interesting. For the full day?’

‘Na. Just a few hours here and there. You seem to be interested in the case.’

‘And all the others. I’m going to tell you something that is not to go further than the two of us for the time being.’

‘What’s that?’

‘I’m Senior Detective Trent Jackson from crime investigations in Sydney.’

‘Holy hell. I mean... sorry.’

Trent grinned. ‘That’s okay. I’m currently on extended leave. I’d like it to stay that way if possible. I have enough to do running the property although that’s been put on the backburner and Hayden’s doing a lot of my share.
